I was watching the making of the Burj Al Arab (Dubai’s 7 star hotel) and I realized how similar the process of building this hotel is to life. My friend Kelvin Aigbefo made me watch it and now I’m grateful that he did because it inspired a chain thought process and most importantly this article.
The architect comes up with a proposed structure. The ability of the architect to think big determines how iconic a structure is. An iconic structure is always identifiable at a glance of the extremely skeletal structure. Your idea/dream/plan must be iconic. An iconic architect doesn’t face any limitation with his thoughts. He thinks like there is nothing impossible and he draws out the thought.
The engineering and building phase is the point of calculations and executions. These points bring the theoretical work of the architect to fruition. In the execution of the architectural design of this 7 star hotel, the engineers and builders encountered proven impossibilities and ran to Sheikh to complain but he was steadfast and unwavering about his end goal and he made it time bound. This chased the engineers to work and to solve the impossibilities they encountered, they required innovations and it proved my rule of possibility: Anything is possible if you stop thinking it is impossible. It also proved that it requires innovations to ensure you achieve the end goal of your idea. If it’s impossible, it’s your chance to invent. If you can think it, it’s possible. Sometimes being an expert limits you. It rids you of the innovation power to take risks because you’re being to logical on the outcome already predicted or studied.
The person who the plan is drawn for has to be unwavering about the end goal. He may be flexible in execution but unwavering in his end goal. A lot of things would be impossible till you prove otherwise. Be fixed on achieving your big dreams. Every problem you encounter is a room for ground breaking discoveries but when you compromise you’d fall into the majority group hence giving room to mediocrity. Leadership is not just about followers but about the ability to discipline yourself and stand by your dream/idea no matter what. It is the ability to lead your idea to success.
Quality is of essence. You need a Quality team and Quality products. Execution is not just about experience but passion, drive and willingness to not just execute but break new frontiers. Doing is different from thinking but don’t be dismayed. You can have both.
Finishing is of the essence. Your ability to package your product in the best cover possible is what attracts people, investors etc. The internal exotic decoration of Burj Al Arab matches its external look. Some people spend more time on one than the other. Your content that you’ve developed over time is what keeps them after they’ve been attracted. The ability to strike a balance and put excellent effort into both is what guarantees AN ICONIC FINISH.
Take risks and enforce your idea. You’re one step away from breaking records.
