Brands often use sex to sell their products in ads and my friend, Uwem looked into the matter to analyze how effective this is. The question is, Does sex sell?
Look at the picture above for a couple of seconds, what do you see?
What does the picture above/ad tell you? Hold that thought.
A recent study from the University of Georgia looked at sexual ads appearing in magazines over 30 years and found that the numbers are up. Sex has been used to sell everything especially in adverts featuring Alcohol, Beauty products and entertainment. By sex, I mean “sexual ads or sexually-implying ads”
However, it is important to note that this has been successfully used to sell low-risk products which can be purchased on impulse proving that Sex is not as effective when selling high-risk and informational products such as banking services, appliances, utility trucks and the likes.
On the flip side and backed by statistics, it has been proven that advertisers use sex because it CAN be very effective. The human mind is somewhat wired to notice sexually transmitted information thus Ads with sexual content tend to attract more attention.
So can we then say that Sex is an effective tool for selling?
